Chapter Eleven
âHello, handsome,â I said when I answered the door and found Alec standing on my doorstep.
He grinned. âHello, beautiful,â he said and kissed me. âHow are you this evening?â
I stepped back to let him into the house. âIâve been doing wonderfully well,â I said. âI made plum butter today and Iâm going to sell small jars of it at Henryâs Home Cooking Restaurant.â
âPlum butter? I donât think Iâve ever had plum butter,â he said and followed me into the kitchen. âI may need to try it out to make sure it passes muster.â
âOh, it will pass muster,â I said. âBut you know what Iâm going to do first?â
He looked at me, one eyebrow raised. âNo, tell me.â
âIâm going to take you out to dinner. I know youâve been working hard all day and you need a lovely dinner to top off your day.â
âThat does sound good, but Iâm hardly dressed to go out,â he said, holding up both hands so I could get a good look at him. He was wearing a faded T-shirt and jeans.
âYou are dressed perfectly for dinner. Let me grab my purse and we will be on our way.â
âWhere are we going?â he asked, following me into the living room. âAnd when am I going to get to taste that plum butter?â
âWeâll have some plum butter when we get back home. I made some vanilla scones and the plum butter is wonderful on them.â I grabbed my purse and put it over my shoulder. âOkay, letâs go.â
âWhere are we going?â he asked again, following me out the door.
I locked the door and turned to him. âLe Chemise.â
âWait a minute; I am completely underdressed for that place. And we were just there.â
âWho cares? They knew they were opening up a business in a small town, and itâs not like small-town folk dress up all the time. And you know you love the food there, so donât complain.â
âWhatever you say.â He chuckled, and we got into his black SUV.
When he had pulled out of my driveway, I turned to him. âSo tell me whatâs going on with the case? I want all the details.â
He chuckled again. âYouâre nothing if not reliable. I know exactly what Iâm going to get with you.â He looked over at me.
âThat should absolutely delight you. No surprises here. Now whatâs going on?â
âWe got the medical reports back, and she was hit in the back of the head with a blunt object.â
âSo, not an accident?â
He shook his head. âNot an accident. The wound was too large, and the angle wasnât right for a fall.â
âAny idea why she was at the beach?â
He shook his head again. âNo, her husband last saw her at work. He left early because heâd been there since early that morning and she never came home.â
âWait a minute, did he file a missing personâs report?â
He shook his head. âNo, she wasnât missing for twenty-four hours. You and Lucy found her on the beach long before twenty-four hours would have been up.
